Projects

MIDEF Aims at formulating various projects which will benefit the residents of mafia, and other sorounding towns and villages. Below is a list of our on going projects:

Education

The project is justifiable for a number of reasons. Chief among these are the UN Millennium Development Goals [MDGs] which state that by 2015 every child must go to school. Lately Tanzania has witnessed massive expansion of primary schools. This has inevitably led to an increase in demand for spaces in secondary schools. MIDEF decision to establish the school should be seen as an attempt to compliment Government’s efforts of establishing Secondary Schools in each Ward in the country. Construction of this school is also consistent with the Government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Bweni Secondary school located in a beautiful seaside area of Bweni and the site covers an area of approximately 60 acres of land all of which were generously donated by the Bweni villagers. We started making the access road and clearing the site in October 2006, and building work started soon after. All the labour work at site is on voluntary basis by the Bweni villagers. Voluntary labour alone has resulted into a savings of 35% of total construction costs.

Building a school in Africa has been an enormous undertaking and raising the funds has been a struggle, but we have now completed phase I &II. Construction started in December 2006 whereby, 24 classrooms and 6 staff houses were completed. Upon completion, the school will accommodate 960 students [Form 1 to Form 6] and will have 32 teachers. The project is being implemented in 7 phases.

The remaining phases with their respective completion dates will be as follows:

Phase
Description Date
III 9 staff houses; 4 units of dormitories [160 students] End 2009
IV 20 units dormitories, dining/multipurpose hall, kitchen Mid 2010
V ICT complex, language lab, library, auditorium Late 2010
VI 17 staff houses, administrative block Mid 2011
VII Sports fields and facilities, health care center [50 beds] Late 2011

Upon completion, the school will have the following facilities:

• 24 Classrooms
• 4 Laboratories [Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Languages]
• ICT Complex and Language Laboratories
• Library Block and Auditorium
• Staff Rooms
• Kitchen and Store
• 24 units of dormitories [40 students each] and Matron houses
• Dining/Multipurpose Hall
• Play Grounds
• 50 fully Furnished Staff Houses
• Health Care Centre with 50 beds

This is a very large and worthwhile project, and we will need more funding for additional classrooms, teachers' houses, toilets, etc., so that we can continue with the building programme. If you want an interesting project to raise money for, this could be the one for you.

Healthcare

MIDEF intends to build a 150 bed hospital in Mafia Island. The new hospital will have several departments such as Pediatrics, Surgery, Internal Medicine, Emergency Room, Intensive Care, and Ambulatory Services. These services will be supported by Radiology, Laboratory and other ancillary services and will open in a step-wise fashion, starting with 20 beds to increase to 50 beds during the first 6 months and with the expectation to ramp up to full capacity (150 beds) after 18 to 24 months.

A special focus will be placed on maternal and child health where the burden of illness and death is particularly heavy, and will also address Emerging diseases such as diabetes, mental, stroke, cancer, and infectious diseases, especially HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. Ambulatory care services will support and feed the in-patient services.

Environment

The loss of forests and changing land use are both a driver and a result of poverty in the Island. MIDEF aims to find sustainable solutions that break this cycle. Improving land use practices is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty and build resilience in poor, rural communities – and is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our goal therefore is twofold: to protect and manage forests to mitigate climate change, and to make this be viable economically for the local communities.

We hold regular meetings to train local communities about environmental issues, including tree planting, reforestation, fuel-efficient wood burning clay stoves composting, fruit growing and drying. MIDEF is also exploring Carbon trading option in the future.
